‘Avatar,’ ‘Pinocchio,’ ‘The Rings of Power’ Lead VES Awards Nominations
The Visual Effects Society (VES) has announced the nominees for its 21st annual VES Awards, which recognize outstanding visual effects and artistry in film, television, commercials, and video games.
Unsurprisingly, the most-nominated film is also the most ambitious vfx film of 2022, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, whose vfx studio WetaFX (formerly Weta Digital) scored 14 nominations. This breaks the record for the most nominations for a single project at the VES Awards, eclipsing the 13 nominations for The Mandalorian in 2021.
On the animation side, the critical darling of the awards circuit, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, leads the way with six nominations. In series, Amazon Studios’ super-expensive vfx spectacle The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power came out on top with seven nominations.
Disney’s Strange World and Netflix’s The Sea Beast had the second-most nominations for an animation project with four apiece, while Pixar’s Turning Red picked up three nods. Stop-motion animation is particularly well represented this year; in addition to Pinocchio, Phil Tippett’s Mad God and Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild each earned two nominations.
In addition to today’s nominations, VES had previously announced that this year’s lifetime achievement award would be presented to film and tv producer Gale Anne Hurd. Her producing credits include The Terminator (which she also wrote with her husband at the time, James Cameron), Aliens, The Abyss, Æon Flux, Armageddon, Hulk, and The Walking Dead.
“By focusing on daring material, championing technological innovations and being the consummate hands-on collaborator, she has carved out a leading position in the previously male-dominated world of the blockbuster, and become a recognized creator of iconic cultural touchstones,” said VES Chair Lisa Cooke. “Gale is a driving force in our global industry and an exemplary role model, and we are very honored to bestow her with the VES Lifetime Achievement Award.”
The nominees in the 25 categories were selected by VES members at 27 in-person and virtual nomination events conducted worldwide. This year’s awards gala will take place on February 15 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
