Box Office: ‘Mario’ Stays On Top, ‘Detective Conan’ Opens Huge, ‘Hoppers’ Holds Strong In Global Top Five
Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie stayed firmly in control at the local box office over its second weekend, bringing in another $69 million from the domestic audience.
That is a strong hold for a film of this size and points to continued family turnout and repeat viewing, even though the spring break period has passed for most markets. Helmed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film’s domestic total has already climbed past $308 million in just two weeks.
Internationally, Mario keeps stacking up similarly impressive numbers. After an $83.5 million offshore weekend, the film’s global total is now around $628.8 million, with particularly strong showings in Europe and Latin America. At this pace, the Mario Bros. sequel is on track to cross $1 billion worldwide before the end of the month, making it the first film of 2026 to hit that mark. It’s already the highest-grossing film of the year.
In Japan, Detective Conan remains a major box-office draw, with its latest entry, Fallen Angel of the Highway, debuting with $26.0 million over the weekend, good for third place globally despite the single-territory release. The long-running franchise continues to deliver in its home territory and across Asia, even if its presence in the West remains limited. For now.
Hoppers is still hanging around the top five, both domestically and worldwide, after six weeks in theaters, adding $4.1 million at home and $7.4 million offshore. That gives Pixar another genuine box office success story in original animation, even as the film has been pushed out of the spotlight by Mario’s latest. Worldwide, Daniel Chong’s beaver-led feature has reached $354.4 million, with international markets contributing $197.3 million, a solid result for a non-franchise release in a marketplace still tilted toward branded event movies.
