‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Set For Out-Of-This-World $350M Opening
After rewriting the rules for video game adaptations in 2023 with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo and Illumination are back on track for another stratospheric opening with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Early tracking suggests the sequel could once again dominate the global box office. Opening April 1 in a prime Easter corridor, the film debuts with tremendous expectations.
According to Deadline, the animated sequel is tracking for a $160M+ five-day domestic opening, with estimates ranging from $145M–$160M for the three-day weekend and up to $175M across the holiday frame.
That would put Galaxy on par with, or even slightly ahead of, its predecessor, which opened to $146M and ultimately grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide. The key question is whether the sequel can match that phenomenon or face a drop-off that sometimes follows breakout hits.
Like the first time around, Universal has positioned this film in a lucrative early-April window, benefiting from school holidays and repeat family viewing. Unlike 2023, however, the sequel enters a more competitive release calendar; Hoppers stands out in the kids-and-family animation space, which could impact its runway.
While Galaxy doesn’t necessarily need to replicate its predecessor’s record-breaking run to succeed, expectations remain high, and it wouldn’t be a shock if the film managed that feat. For now, all signs point to Mario once again leading the box office for a solid chunk of time.
