‘Toy Story 5’ Opening Weekend Goes To Infinity And Beyond Franchise’s Best-Ever Opening
Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has delivered the biggest opening weekend in the franchise’s history, launching to an estimated $312 million worldwide.
The sequel earned $160 million domestically and another $152 million internationally, giving Disney the biggest global opening of 2026 so far. The film also posted the second-largest worldwide debut ever for a Pixar release, trailing only last year’s Inside Out 2.
Directed by Andrew Stanton, co-directed by Kenna Harris, and produced by Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter, the film reunites Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the Toy Story gang for a story that pits traditional toys against a new generation of technology-driven entertainment. Marketing for the film (which is reportedly rather low for a movie of its size, but we’ll dig more into that before publishing anything definitive) has centered on the concept of “Toy Meets Tech,” with the toys facing off against a tablet-like newcomer named Lilypad.
According to Disney, Toy Story 5 delivered the sixth-largest opening weekend ever for an animated feature globally. The film was either the number-one movie or the top-performing international release in nearly every major market. China proved a particular bright spot, where the film opened to $18 million, the strongest launch the Toy Story franchise has ever recorded in the territory.
The latest installment still has several key markets to open, including Japan, Germany, Austria, and Hong Kong.
The strong debut continues the remarkable box office run of Pixar’s flagship franchise. Both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 surpassed $1 billion worldwide, and Toy Story 5 is now positioned as one of the studio’s strongest theatrical performers of the post-pandemic era and all but locked in to cross the billion-dollar milestone.
All box office figures are estimates for now, with actuals coming on Tuesday.
