Amazing Digital Circus Amazing Digital Circus

The theatrical rollout of The Amazing Digital Circus finale has quickly become far more than a one-off fan event. In fact, it’s probably the most exciting organic, audience-led phenomenon in the industry since Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters set the streaming world on fire last year.

According to a report by The Wrap, presales for The Last Act have already hit $5 million in the U.S. in just four days, breaking records for Fathom Entertainment and forcing a really exciting expansion in theaters.

Initially positioned as a limited engagement, the release is now stretching to at least 1,800 screens over a two-week window leading up to the episode’s online debut. What started as almost a novelty has quickly evolved into a distribution gold rush with theater owners chasing audience demand and exhibitors reaching out to book additional showtimes as momentum builds.

Distributors in many countries where the film was not originally going to get a release have quickly remedied that oversite, including Glitch’s native Australia.

For Glitch, the push into theaters is not just about one finale. CEO Kevin Lerdwichagul took to social media amid the ticket-buying frenzy to frame the release as a test case, writing that “this one event has the potential to change how the entire industry views indie animation.” That context helps explain some of the fan friction around the two-week theatrical window before the episode will get its YouTube debut, a compromise reached after what he describes as “a lot of back and forth” with exhibitors who initially pushed for longer exclusivity. We’ve included his full message at the end of this article.

The rollout has also exposed the limits of the current system. Lerdwichagul acknowledged gaps in availability and said the team is “in active talks with several theatre chains in many countries,” while encouraging fans to contact local cinemas directly. “Those emails are the best leverage we have,” he noted.

Created by Gooseworx and produced by Glitch Productions, The Amazing Digital Circus has been building its audience since its 2023 pilot went viral, eventually racking up hundreds of millions of views.

Digital-first animation has now proven that the longtime online limitations of non-studio work are a thing of the past. Some streamers figured that out a while ago, and now theatrical distributors are arriving at the party. Better late than never.
