Black N Animated is hosting a two-session feature animation storyboarding workshop led by veteran story artist Christian Roman, whose credits span The Simpsons, Disney Television Animation, and Pixar.
Founded as a community and educational platform for Black animation artists, Black N Animated supports and advances Black talent in the industry through educational programming, professional development, and community-building initiatives.
Titled Story for Feature Animation, the organization’s upcoming intermediate-level course will take place on October 4 and 11, from noon to 3 p.m. PT. It is aimed at participants with fundamental drawing skills and will cover story structure and the differences between written and visual storytelling, including composition, cinematography, visual language, and acting.
Students will also complete a storyboard assignment, receive live critiques and draw-overs, and participate in peer review and a Q&A with Roman. Participants must be available for both sessions and have a way to present their homework digitally.
Roman has worked in television and feature animation for more than three decades. He began as a layout artist on The Simpsons, eventually becoming storyboard supervisor and authoring the show’s How to Storyboard the Simpsons Way manual. He later worked at Disney Television Animation, where he developed and directed Fillmore! and Jake Long: American Dragon. His other early credits include King of the Hill, The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat, Lilo & Stitch, and The Simpsons Movie.
Roman joined Pixar in 2007 and contributed to Toy Story 3, Cars 3, Toy Story 4, Onward, Luca, Dug Days, Elemental, and the studio’s Toy Story shorts and specials. Since leaving Pixar in 2024, he has worked with Aardman, DreamWorks, and 20th Century Animation. He is currently a senior cinematic artist at Cuphead developer Studio MDHR.
The two-session workshop costs $110 for Black N Animated members and $180 for non-members. Registration is available through Black N Animated’s website.
