Rick and Morty Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty, forever and ever, running around, on the big screen, 100 years, in front of audiences.

According to co-creator Dan Harmon, Warner Bros. is in early development on a feature adaptation of the Adult Swim hit, with longtime series director and Emmy-winner Jacob Hair tapped to direct the project. Plot details have not been announced, and no writer has been revealed.

Hair has been part of the show’s creative team since Season 4, directing episodes including “Mort Dinner Rick Andre” and the Emmy-winning “The Vat of Acid Episode.” Before joining Rick and Morty, he worked on other top TV productions, such as Family Guy and Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe.

Rumors of a movie version of the popular Adult Swim franchise have floated around for years. Harmon previously discussed a feature-length installment, while disgraced co-creator Justin Roiland, no longer involved with the show, once described an R-rated theatrical release as a possibility. The latest report suggests Warner Bros. is now finally moving the concept forward as the series heads into its ninth season.

The timing is not surprising. Rick and Morty remains one of Adult Swim’s biggest properties more than a decade after its debut, and Warner Bros. has continued to expand the brand through anime spinoffs, games, and merchandise. A theatrical film would give the franchise room to scale up its sci-fi spectacle beyond the limits of a 22-minute episode. Warner Bros. Pictures Animation bosses also recently made a very public commitment to theatrical distribution, so taking advantage of one of the company’s largest properties with a built-in fan base makes a lot of sense.

No release window has been announced, but the film is reportedly in development, so it will likely be a few years before we see the Sanchez family on the big screen.
