Meet Joyce Pensato And Her Expressionist Remixes of Cartoon Icons

Joyce Pensato (b. 1941, Brooklyn NY) has been painting cartoon characters for years. She takes icons of cartoon art—Felix the Cat, Donald Duck, Batman—and renders them in smudgy charcoal and pastel or runny enamel paint. She works mostly in black and white, occasionally introducing silver and gold for contrast. Though her work seems grounded more in graffiti art, she actually draws from fine art history, from the likes of the Abstract Expressionists, and Philip Guston, who was also influenced by comics.

‘Birds of Paradise’ Looks to Cash In On ‘Rio 2’

On April 1st, Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release "Birds Of Paradise" on DVD exclusively at Walmart and Redbox. If the film looks and feels suspicously like Fox's "Rio" franchise, well...that's the point. One of the film's PR people sent us a press release that states matter-of-factly that "Birds of Paradise" is "timed to the theatrical release of 'Rio 2.'" The latter Blue Sky Studios-produced movie will be released on April 11.

Remember last year when the mainstream media started writing about the glut of animated features and questioning whether the industry was producing too much animation? As usual, they underestimated the animation medium and the connection that audiences have with the art form.

Hand-Drawn Feature “Aunt Hilda!” Has Opened in France

2014 is shaping up to be one of the strongest years for quirky and original animated features. True, there's the usual spate of sequels—"Rio 2," "How to Train Your Dragon 2" and "Planes: Fire and Rescue"—but looking beyond those films, there are some genuinely fresh ideas on the horizon, most notably Laika's "The Boxtrolls," Reel FX's "Book of Life," and Cartoon Saloon's "Song of the Sea."
