Grim Grim

Netflix is reuniting with Wednesday creators Al Gough and Miles Millar for Grim, an adult animated series based on Boom! Studios’ horror-fantasy comic. The project brings the duo together with veteran producer-director Jennifer Yuh Nelson, known for her work on Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots and the Kung Fu Panda franchise.

According to Deadline, which broke the news, the series is now in development with Gough and Millar executive producing through Millar/Gough Ink. Yuh Nelson executive produces alongside Boom! Studios’ Stephen Christy and Adam Yoelin. Comic creators Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano are on board as co-executive producers, with Mette Norkjaer also joining the production team.

The comic, written by Stephanie Phillips with art by Flaviano, coloring by Rico Renzi, and lettering by Tom Napolitano, launched in 2022 to strong sales and quickly became one of Boom! Studios’ most successful titles, wrapping its 25-issue run earlier this month. Boom!’s synopsis for the books reads:

Jessica Harrow is dead. But her journey has only just begun! Discover the world of the afterlife, where Jessica has been recruited as a Reaper, tasked with ferrying countless souls to their final destination. But unlike the rest of the Reapers, she has no memory of what killed her and put her into this predicament. In order to unravel the mystery of her own demise, she’ll have to solve an even bigger one – where is the actual GRIM REAPER?

For Netflix, the adaptation adds another ambitious adult animated project to a slate that has leaned heavily on genre fare, including Love, Death + Robots, Haunted Hotel, Arcane, and the Castlevania series, to name a few.
