This one is new to me. Back around 1980 there was a radio station (KTNQ) in L.A. branded “10-Q.” Apparently they commissioned a 30-second TV spot animated in the style of Tex Avery. Reader Mike Clark sent it in to us, saying:

No doubt inspired by the graffiti animation of artist BLU, Patrick Jean (Pixels) directed this commercial for UK’s Passion Pictures, for client Credit Confidential. The live action was shot on location in Buenos Aires.

Feelin’ down about the state of hand drawn animation? I was watching my favorite news channel and spotted this modest, but nicely animated, commercial for the anti-depressant prescription drug, Abilify – and it perked me right up! It was apparently produced out of th1ng (pronounced “thing one”) in London and directed by Neil Boyle (Roger Rabbit, Space Jam), with animation by the talented team of Mike Shorten (Arthur Christmas, The Illusionist), Geoff McDowall and Sam Taylor. Forget the drug – watch this and maybe the animation will cheer you up too: Credits: 68 Comments » posted in Advertising, Abilify, th1ng April 13, 2011 11:57 pm
Once in a blue moon I see a piece of animation that plain knocks me out. “The Pirate by Trollhättan, Sweden-based Meindbender is one such piece. Masquerading as an innocuous Cartoon Network station promo, it is a boundary-busting achievement in CG animation. The marriage of realistically shaded/lit environments and madcap cartoon distortion (particularly in the bird character) suggest new avenues in computer animation that are worth exploring further. Here’s some background info about how Meindbender achieves its organic looking CG aesthetic. Rio de Janeiro-based animator Rodrigo Leme directed and animated these spots while working in-house at Globosat TV in Brazil. The top piece promoted the airing of the four Indiana Jones films, while the bottom was a promo for a block of horror films. Brew reader and longtime colleague Dana Gabbard (The Duckberg Times) has a side interest in the history of L.A. public transit, and that led to him finding these vinatge animated commercials on You Tube. Matthew Barrett at the Metro Library discovered the original film prints, arranged to get them digitized and placed them on the net. Lantz veteran Milt Schaffer directed these spots, Bill Thompson (Droopy) does the voices and Disney artists Ed Aardal and Clarke Mallery animated them at studio “ERA Productions for Television” in 1956. Read more about their production in this PDF of an article from The Metro Coach News (June 1956), which includes photos of the people who worked on the spots plus some of the storyboards. 13 Comments » posted in Advertising, Bill Thompson, Clark Mallery, Clark Mallory, Ed Aardal, ERA Productions, Milt Schaffer March 23, 2011 12:00 pm
There’s nothing like a French PSA done to tune of Joan Jett’s Bad Reputation, animated in the style of a 1930s Hollywood cartoon, to teach you a lesson about Aids prevention! We’ve come a long way from the days when Fritz The Cat was considered shocking. CREDITS (Thanks, Chris Sobieniak) |
