The world’s most chaotic family road trip is heading back out onto the highway, after Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix announced they are teaming up again for The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2, a follow-up to the Oscar-nominated 2021 hit that became one of the platform’s most beloved animated films.

According to Variety, Guillermo Martinez, who served as head of story on the original film, will co-direct alongside JP Sans (The Bad Guys 2). The screenplay is being written by Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux (The Great North), and production is expected to kick off in early 2026. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller return as producers through their Lord Miller banner, alongside Sony Pictures Animation’s Kurt Albrecht. Original director Mike Rianda will serve as executive producer.

Netflix will again distribute the film under its ongoing licensing partnership with Sony, which led to the platform’s biggest-ever original film, KPop Demon Hunters. The first Mitchells feature famously switched hands during the pandemic. Originally slated for a 2020 theatrical release under the title Connected, the film was sold to Netflix for a reported $100 million, where it went on to become a critical and audience favorite.

A vibrant mix of touching family comedy and frantic, stylized CG animation that Sony has become famous for, The Mitchells vs. the Machines followed the dysfunctional Mitchell family as they accidentally became humanity’s last hope during a robot uprising. The film won eight Annie Awards, including best animated feature, and earned an Oscar nomination.

Sequel plot details are being kept under wraps, but it seems a sure thing that fans of the first will get another helping of the hectic family comedy that made the first film a pandemic-era hit.
