‘Not Alone’ Premiere; Emmy Nominations; Exceptional Indies
We’re pretty proud to be closing out the week with a trio of unique exclusives. After falling in love with it at this year’s ASIFA-East Festival, we were thrilled to debut Momo Cao’s remarkable short Not Alone, winner of the first-ever Cartoon Brew Award for Excellence in Filmmaking, alongside an interview about how a family revelation transformed the film into something far more intimate than she ever expected.
In the digital-native space, we profile rising indie animation star Wabie Velasquez, who talks about building a career outside the traditional studio system and finding an audience online. Former Netflix anime executive Taiki Sakurai also spoke with us about his new studio and debuted the trailer for its charming first original short, 20001: An Earth Odyssey, which premieres later this month at Fantasia.
Staying with anime, we caught up with the creative team behind Crunchyroll’s recent release Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, the latest project from Naoko Yamada and Science Saru. We also published our Annecy conversation with Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who reflects on the network’s evolving strategy. Meanwhile, Fathom Entertainment, one of the biggest players in alternative theatrical distribution, named a new CEO as it continues expanding beyond event cinema.
The Television Academy announced this year’s animation and VFX Emmy nominees, kicking off another awards season, while the Ottawa International Animation Festival unveiled both its feature and short competition lineups. We also have the latest on this year’s Visual Effects Society honorees.
