Each year, SIGGRAPH returns with a bigger program of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality works. The conference’s next edition, which takes place in Los Angeles from July 28 to August 1, will boast the broadest immersive content offering yet, including a number of world premieres.

Topping the bill is A Kite’s Tale, Disney’s second original vr experience. Last year, the studio released its first vr short film project, Cycles, directed by Jeff Gipson. This new piece, directed by Bruce Wright, combines hand-drawn animation with virtual reality to tell the story of a playful young kite who becomes entangled with a pompous dragon-kite.

Other notable vr premieres at SIGGRAPH 2019 will be Il Divino: Michelangelo’s Sistine Ceiling in VR by Epic Games, the developers behind gaming sensation Fortnite; Mary and the Monster: Chapter One from Parallux and New York University’s Future Reality Lab; and Magic Leap’s Undersea. In total, the conference will feature 48 immersive works spread across two strands: Immersive Pavilion and VR Theater. The projects were chosen from over 290 submissions.

The digital arts conference, which moves around North America, will be held this year at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The Immersive Pavilion and VR Theater Kiosks are open to conference participants with an Experiences badge and above. VR Theater Screenings are open to those with Full Conference and Full Conference Platinum registration only — for more information, head to the SIGGRAPH website.
