Netflix Drops Sing-Along Version Of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ After Box Office-Leading Weekend
Netflix’s box office dominance appears to be short-lived, as the streamer has now released the theatrical sing-along version of Sony Pictures Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters on its streaming service worldwide.
On the platform, the sing-along version is a separate title from the original, which could impact the film’s record-breaking viewership run if the views are split between the two versions. We’ve reached out to Netflix to ask how the numbers will be tallied cumulatively or separately, but haven’t heard back yet.
(Update: Netflix tells us that both versions will be tallied together starting next week, when the sing-along numbers start being tracked.)
KPDH‘s sing-along release comes on the heels of a splashy weekend of fan events in several English-speaking territories as Netflix staged limited theatrical sing-along screenings across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, drawing sold-out crowds at more than 1,300 theaters in North America alone. Netflix doesn’t share box office figures, but industry reports have the film’s final weekend gross around $18 million, good for first place in North America and fifth place globally, despite the extremely limited release.
In New York, the Empire State Building lit up gold in honor of the movie’s breakout anthem “Golden,” while fans in Manhattan hopped on a sing-along double-decker bus. Cast members Arden Cho, May Hong, Ken Jeong, and Kevin Woo joined directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans to surprise audiences in New York and Los Angeles.


Since its debut on June 20, KPop Demon Hunters has become the most-watched Netflix original animated film ever and should pass the streamer’s live-action film Red Notice to top Netflix’s all-time list by the time updated figures are released tomorrow.
Its soundtrack has been just as dominant: songs from the film have racked up billions of streams, and “Golden” recently climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
