‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Becomes Netflix’s Fourth Most‑Viewed Original Film, Eyes No 1 Spot
Last week, Netflix’s smash hit KPop Demon Hunters not only celebrated its seventh consecutive week in the streamer’s Top 10 list of most-watched films globally – finishing in the second spot, but it also climbed into the No. 4 spot on the platform’s all‑time chart of most‑popular English‑language films, and looks a lock to reach the second spot by the time next week’s list is published.
Kpop Demon Hunters has been viewed 158.8 million times since its release on June 20. That trails only Red Notice (230.9 m), Carry‑On (172.1 m), and Don’t Look Up (171.4 m). Netflix uses a 91-day metric for tracking its films’ viewing numbers, meaning KPDH has another five weeks to improve its standing on the streamer’s all-time list.
Needing only 72 million views during that time, roughly 50% of its current total, it’s not hard to imagine that KPop Demon Hunters will eventually become Netflix’s most-viewed original film of all time, based on the company’s current tracking metrics.
The Sony Pictures Animation-produced musical action-comedy began with a modest 9.2 million views in its opening week. Unlike most Netflix titles, the film only got more popular in the weeks after release and had cumulated 82 million views by mid-July, including a weekly peak of 25.8 million views during the week ending July 20. It became Netflix’s first film ever to reach its maximum viewership in its fifth week on the platform.
Created by directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film traces K-pop group Huntr/x’s secret lives as demon hunters battling a demonic boy‑band rival, the Saja Boys.
Much of the film’s momentum is credited to its chart-topping soundtrack, striking animation, genre-blending style, and authentic, culturally rooted storytelling. Netflix has confirmed it is the platform’s most-viewed original animated feature to date, and we’re told talks are underway with SPA for two sequels, as well as a short film to keep fans engaged during production.
