Cali’s Animation Investment; Paramount’s ‘Avatar’ Trailer; Anime Expo News
Animation’s summer is in full swing, and the Box Office reflects as much, with Minions & Monsters joining Toy Story 5 at the top of worldwide charts. Betting on further financial successes from the medium, California has earmarked 59% of its latest studio tax credits to animated titles from Disney, DreamWorks, and Pixar.
In a story that, sadly, has nothing to do with cinemas anymore, Paramount moved up the streaming debut of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender and finally unveiled an official trailer months after the film leaked online in full.
A somewhat subdued Anime Expo saw Crunchyroll announce a Solo Leveling feature and the first look at the long-awaited Ghost of Tsushima adaptation. In Spain, Movistar Plus+ ended one of Europe’s most important short film initiatives when it shut down Proyecto Corto, a decision that has sparked concern throughout the continent’s animation and live-action filmmaking communities.
We saw a tremendous response to the initial trailer for Sandra Powers’ striking Peruvian “tropi-goth” feature Beasts of Death, previewed Miyu’s jazz-infused fairy tale Ogresse, explored why filmmakers in this year’s Next Lab Generation program embraced VR while snubbing AI, and looked back at nearly a century of animated robot uprisings.
