Introducing Cartoon Brew’s Untold Tales

As long as I've loved animation, I've been fascinated with the personal stories of people who work in the animation business. Not simply, "What character did you make?," but WHY and HOW did you make it? I became actively involved in documenting those stories when I published the print 'zine "Animation Blast," and it's something I've never stopped doing. For me, it wasn't just about talking to a handful of familiar directors and animators, but to talk with everyone, especially those who had worked quietly in the trenches and whose stories hadn't yet been told.

Watch the Banned Danish Election Cartoon ‘Voteman’ (NSFW)

What's the best way to encourage young people to vote? The Danish parliament (or Folketinget) decided that the answer was an ultra-violent, sex-filled Adult Swim-style cartoon. To encourage young Danes to vote in the upcoming European elections, the Folketinget commissioned a 90-second piece of animation starring a leather-clad dolphin-riding muscleman named Voteman who gets blowjobs from an army of women when he's not busy decapitating Danish people who don't vote. The reported budget for the piece was $30,000.

Meet Joyce Pensato And Her Expressionist Remixes of Cartoon Icons

Joyce Pensato (b. 1941, Brooklyn NY) has been painting cartoon characters for years. She takes icons of cartoon art—Felix the Cat, Donald Duck, Batman—and renders them in smudgy charcoal and pastel or runny enamel paint. She works mostly in black and white, occasionally introducing silver and gold for contrast. Though her work seems grounded more in graffiti art, she actually draws from fine art history, from the likes of the Abstract Expressionists, and Philip Guston, who was also influenced by comics.
